I tumbled onto the ground and squeaked while a wonderfully soft tongue licked off the gooey layer of slime. Warm, furry things squirmed around me, and I could only distinguish blurry figures in the light. My belly growled, and I scrambled towards the source of warmth and the aroma of rich milk, attempting unsuccessfully to push away the snouts of what I then knew to be my siblings. Gradually the four dogs around me came into focus, and I was disappointed about their presence. I wanted my mother all to myself.

One day, I was starving, and trying to squeeze my way through to suckle when my brother was snatched up, up away into the air, followed by my sister, and the rest of my siblings. Triumphant that all the milk was mine at last, I wagged my tail furiously as I clambered to drink the warm milk. Out of the blue, a large hand grabbed me away from my mother, who growled menacingly as the hand slammed the wiry door closed. I was lifted away, and chill air struck my skin as I turned my head to look back at my mother, who now whimpered softly behind the metal bars as my siblings and I were carried away.

We yelped as we were squished into a small cage by the rough hands. There was only enough space for us to move past each other to get food. We had a bit of milk every day, but it was cold and bland. I panted and wailed in desperation, but I knew I could not escape. A man checked on us once in a week, and when he went past with his pen and notepad, he would mutter, “Chihuahua pups, doin’ good, enough supplies...” and continue on. Our smelly cage was only one in millions. It was very noisy, with other dogs in neighbouring cages barking and howling all around us. Not only were the cages stinky, they were humid and claustrophobic as well. Our fur became sticky and wet, matted with stool and urine.

After a few weeks, when I woke up one ordinary morning, I found myself with a couple of other Chihuahua pups in a spacious, padded enclosure with three walls and a glass window that looked out onto the street where I could see humans strolling past. I had my own food bowl, water bowl, and a lot of toys. Even though I knew I was in a better place, I still paced back and forth anxiously, hoping to be as free as the humans outside. There was a nice lady called Victoria, who owned the place. She fed me and took me outside to ”do my business” and play everyday.

Thanks to her scrumptious food full of good fatty meat and nutrients, I felt I was finally starting to bulk up and put on weight. I felt confident that if I ever saw my brothers or sisters again they would not call me a runt and nor be able to push me out of the way anymore.
I was, however, beginning to give up hope that I would get rescued. F
