And she stops, as if she’s just noticed my smile. ’’It doesn’t matter, Clarke.'' I say, softly. ‘'I can leave, find somewhere far and wide, but it won’t matter. Because in my bone there makes black blood; and in my neck is a Flame they need; in my scars a mark of my heritage, my tattoos a resemblance of my memory. It doesn’t matter, for in my heart and my people’s minds—I am, I was, Commander. They need to see fit to my end.''

But my people survive.

And I know—

Commanders die.

I will die.

But my people will live. And that is enough.

The Last True Commander clears her throat, and when she speaks again, her tone is wistful. ''We die young, Madi,’’ she says, so matter-of-fact and with rue, and my breath hitches.

Lexa continues, like she hasn’t noticed at all. ''Commanders die,'' she says, and it’s so blatant and blunt like any other fact, that I don’t even get to comprehend it before she moves on.

‘’We must live life with their people in mind, and not ourselves. We must persist, even when we wish to shrivel and die. We must sacrifice our lives; our relations, our family, for them,'' and when she says this, there’s not spite but sadness in her tone, ''We must survive for our people; that is the will of a Commander, even when all is futile and all feels lost that we wish nought to continue on.’’

I look away. And under her breath, Lexa murmurs: ''Even if it should never be.''

Even if it should never be.

So I nod, look at her, and say: ''I understand.''

Roarnts. You and I have a long history together.

I first saw you in the Click Exchange, when I first joined this site in January of 2015. Loved seeing you in the child stage as we exchanged tokens and we clicked on creatures, but the teen stage... whoa. That was awe-inducing.
