"The wind shifted the sand from one dune to another. Before them lay a vast expanse of dead, light-scorched earth, where the white sand silently covered the sleeping monsters with a thin blanket. Sometimes the wind blew harder, and then the sand was blown up, exposing the giant plates of black metal that replaced the surface. The black orb of the sun sinking below the horizon, poured streams of red light on limbo, painting black, white and gray with blood.

He was sitting on a small rectangular stone that vaguely resembled obsidian. The same black, solid, and hard, with too regular angles, it did not reflect the light, but absorbed it.

"Why did we split up?" the doppelganger asked softly, his eyes fixed on the void in the endless sky. "Why were we torn in two?"

Luis, standing behind him like a shadow, said nothing and shrugged vaguely. He couldn't take his eyes off the stone, which seemed to be drawing all the attention to itself."
