Translation: the synthesis of polypeptides on ribosomes

Initiation of translation involves assembly of the components that carry out the process.

Initiation:
Small ribosomal subunit binds to the 5’ end of the mRNA and moves along until it reaches the start codon (AUG).
The appropriate tRNA molecule binds to the codon.
The large ribosomal subunit aligns with the tRNA molecule at the P site and forms a complex with the small subunit.

Synthesis of the polypeptide involves a repeated cycle of events.

Elongation:
The second tRNA molecule pairs with the next codon at the A site.
The amino acid in the P site is covalently attached via a peptide bond to that of the A site. The tRNA in the P site is now deacylated (no amino acid), while the tRNA in the A site carries the peptide chain.

Translocation: the ribosome moves along the mRNA chain (5’ → 3’) one codon at a time. The deacylated tRNA moves to the E site and is released, the tRNA carrying the peptide chain moves to the P site and a new tRNA molecule attaches to the next codon at A.

Disassembly of the components follows termination of translation.

Disassembly: when a stop codon is reached, a release factor is recruited that signals for translation to stop. The polypeptide is released and the ribosome disassembles.

About Asteran Eggs

The Asteran will only hatch when the sunflower is fully grown so many owners keep the eggs in a safe part of their garden where a lot of sunlight can reach it. Even when the flower is not fully grown, the petals will open during the day and close during the night for protection which can confuse owners who do not know this.

About the Asteran Creature

A young Asteran loves to run. It will run around fields of flowers for hours and during this time the Asteran will help pollinate the sunflowers in the field. The sunflower on the Asteran's back helps provide some nutrients but not enough for the creature to survive so a daily meal is required to keep an Asteran healthy.

The Asteran will take a floret from the sunflower head and place it next to its owner. This is a sign that the Asteran loves the owner and the floret should be cherished greatly since the Asteran will only remove one in its lifetime.
